• Power

  Expertise is granted authority, and the prompt asks what follows from the fact that most knowers must take expert claims on trust.

  The capacity to shape what counts as knowledge, who is heard, and what gets funded, published or taught. Power is not only censorship; setting an agenda, controlling a platform or being granted authority all change the knowledge that a community ends up with.

• Justification

  Trusting an expert is a form of justification, which raises the question of how a non-expert can assess it without becoming one.

  The reasoning that connects evidence to a conclusion. Two knowers can hold the same evidence and be justified in different beliefs if their inferential standards differ. Justification is what separates knowing something from happening to be right about it.

Scope

Justification: The strength of justification a field demands is calibrated to what it is for. A discipline whose errors are expensive sets a higher bar than one where a provisional answer is useful, so justification standards are partly a statement about a field's purpose.

Perspectives

Power: Which perspectives are present in a field is largely decided by who was admitted, funded, published and cited. The composition of a discipline is a record of the power exercised over its formation.

Methods and tools

Justification: A discipline's methods encode its standard of justification: peer review, replication, source criticism and proof are all answers to the question of when an inference has earned its conclusion. Comparing those standards across areas of knowledge is more revealing than asking which is strictest.

Ethics

Power: Knowledge confers standing, so producing it is an exercise of influence over people who must take it on trust. The ethical questions here are about authority and its misuse, not only about how research subjects are treated.
