Knowledge and Society
Values
What a knower or a community takes to be worth pursuing, protecting or preferring. Values operate inside knowledge production and not just around it: they select the problems, set the acceptable risk of error, and decide which trade-offs count as costs.
Who controls knowledge and its ethical weight. These concepts ask who decides what counts, who benefits, and what knowing something obliges you to do.
IA prompts this concept is central to
The wording is the guide’s, exactly. Quote it as it stands.
- IA prompt 02Are some types of knowledge more useful than others?Usefulness is not a neutral measure. Ranking knowledge by it smuggles in a judgement about what the knowledge is for and whose purposes count.
- IA prompt 11Can new knowledge change established values or beliefs? The prompt asks whether the direction of influence can run from knowledge to values, when the more common claim is that it runs the other way.
- IA prompt 17Why do we seek knowledge?Motives for seeking knowledge reveal what the seeker takes to be worth having, and different motives licence different methods.
- IA prompt 34In what ways do our values affect our acquisition of knowledge?Acquisition is selective. What a knower goes looking for, and what they stop to check, is set by what they take to be worth knowing.
- IA prompt 35In what ways do values affect the production of knowledge? This prompt shifts the question from the individual knower to the production of knowledge, where values operate through funding, method choice and acceptable error rates.
Prompts where it is a useful second angle
- IA prompt 16Should some knowledge not be sought on ethical grounds?Deciding that some question should not be asked ranks a value above knowing, which is exactly the trade-off the prompt exposes.
- IA prompt 27Does all knowledge impose ethical obligations on those who know it?What obligation a knower reads off a piece of knowledge depends on what they already hold to matter.
Values under the knowledge framework
Only the elements where this concept has something substantive to say. An empty pairing is left dimmed rather than padded.
What a community values determines which problems look important, so the value commitments of a discipline and the range of perspectives inside it reinforce one another over time.
Values are not applied to finished knowledge from outside. They are already in the choice of question, the acceptable rate of false positives, and the decision about which harms count as costs, which is why value-free enquiry is not an available option.
