IA prompt 10 of 35
What challenges are raised by the dissemination and/or communication of knowledge?
What this prompt is really asking
Each of the twelve TOK concepts gives you a different way into a prompt. These are the ones that do the most work here.
Power
Knowledge and Society · primary lensDissemination requires a channel, and whoever controls the channel shapes what reaches a knower and in what order.
The capacity to shape what counts as knowledge, who is heard, and what gets funded, published or taught. Power is not only censorship; setting an agenda, controlling a platform or being granted authority all change the knowledge that a community ends up with.
Responsibility
Knowledge and SocietyCommunicating knowledge accurately, including its uncertainty, is an obligation that falls on the communicator rather than the audience.
What a knower owes as a result of knowing, or of being in a position to know. It covers obligations in producing knowledge, in passing it on accurately, and in acting or refusing to act on it, including the responsibility taken on by choosing not to look.
Where the knowledge framework bites
Reached through this prompt’s concepts, in the framework’s canonical order.
- Scope
Responsibility: Disciplines disagree about where their responsibility ends. Whether a field's remit stops at producing findings or extends to their application is a scope question with direct ethical consequences.
- Perspectives
Power: Which perspectives are present in a field is largely decided by who was admitted, funded, published and cited. The composition of a discipline is a record of the power exercised over its formation.
- Ethics
Power: Knowledge confers standing, so producing it is an exercise of influence over people who must take it on trust. The ethical questions here are about authority and its misuse, not only about how research subjects are treated.
Responsibility: This element asks what practitioners owe: integrity in producing knowledge, honesty about uncertainty when communicating it, and a decision about what to do once something is known that cannot be unknown.
Themes
- Knowledge and technology
Dissemination is now largely algorithmic, so the challenges are properties of platforms rather than of speakers.
- Knowledge and language
Translation, register and technical vocabulary are where knowledge is most often lost in transmission.
